How it works: Activates two gut-hormone receptors (GIP and GLP-1) involved in appetite regulation and blood-sugar control, which together can reduce appetite and food intake.
Known risks: Commonly reported: nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation. Boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors based on rodent studies; pancreatitis reported.
Contraindications: Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2; known hypersensitivity.
Drug interactions: May reduce effectiveness of oral contraceptives; additive hypoglycemia risk with insulin or insulin secretagogues.
