How it works: Thought to prolong the growth phase of the hair cycle and increase blood flow to follicles; the exact mechanism for hair growth is not fully established.
Known risks: Topical: scalp irritation, unwanted facial hair, shedding when starting. Oral (off-label): fluid retention, increased heart rate, low blood pressure.
Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity; caution with cardiovascular disease for oral use.
Drug interactions: Oral minoxidil may have additive effects with other blood-pressure-lowering agents.
